We have a rare opportunity for a Head of Finance Operations to join our Finance team on a 12-month parental leave contract in our Melbourne office. 

The Finance team provides insight into the firm’s performance, which supports operational and strategic decisions. It is responsible for managing the firm’s financial resources, financial planning, reporting and analysis.

Working closely with our Chief Financial Officer, the Head of Finance Operations is responsible for overseeing the accounts payable, trust money, receipting and collections functions across the firm nationally.  We are looking for someone with expertise in finance operations and working capital management within a law firm environment, who has the ability to balance competing demands, lead and engage a large team and drive success and quality through continuous improvement and adherence to policies.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensuring efficient processes and policies are in place to protect the firm in working capital management.
  • Manage and oversee the daily finance operations of the firm, ensuring maintenance of adequate cashflow for business operations.
  • Monitor quality and compliance with trust regulations and provide key guidance around the best practice of dealings with trust money.
  • Manage the firm’s exposure to debt, ensuring action and escalation taken where required and timely reporting to the CFO.
  • Maintain strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including Partners, Business Managers, Banks and system providers.
  • Lead and effectively manage a large team through delegation, feedback and ongoing guidance and mentorship, driving towards continuous improvement.
  • Lead innovation, identifying opportunities for process optimisation and managing through projects planning and implementation
  • Reporting to the CFO on key risk areas including audit and banking compliance.

Required skills and personal attributes

  • Demonstrated experience in the same or a similar role within a reputable commercial law firm.
  • Excellent understanding of Australian Trust Regulations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, time management, prioritisation and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of CMS/Aderant or other finance software.
  • Experience working on a finance system transformation project would be highly desirable.
